The tuna fishing industry had never been this favorable and worthwhile since its birth on the side of the Earth. General Santos City lying at the head of the Sarangani Bay has been acknowledge as the “Boom Town City of the South” and considered as one of the fastest-growing cities in the Philippines. It had been for its strategic geographical location and existence of other amenities needed by the fishing industry, that makes General Santos City could become South Cotabato’s heart of commerce and trade. The main source of tuna production were the seas that surrounds the city. The “Generals” are very proud to have the city crowned as the Tuna Capital of the country. Out of 16 tuna canneries in the Philippines, 7 of which are around in General Santos City. The city of General Santos is also known as the second largest tuna exporter in Asian region.

TUNA BELT

The tuna belt stretches from the Celebes Sea eastward for almost 5000 miles and from this belt 15 degrees north to 15 degrees south, can sustain tuna catches of roughly 3 million tons per annum, worth about $4 billion. General Santos City being the country’s Tuna capital lies close to these tuna fishing grounds and is accessible to markets of Japan, United States, EU, China and other Asian countries.
