I. In Review

Tigsik is a Bicol literary form which literally means "toast."   It is an old form of Bicol poetry which exhibits the innate talent of Bikolanos for verses. Mostly in satirical form, Tigsik aims at creating an impact on a certain person or organization through the use of poetic Bicol words.  Whether it be to point out wrongs, to praise, or simply to joke, tigsik creates an outlook of thoughts such that the person, place, or thing referred to must be able to interpret, thus requiring much thought and discourse. It is one form of rawit-dawit, sabi-sabi or to some  a "verbal joust", which showcases the Bikolanos’ uncanny natural ability to convey various ideas through the use of witty words that indirectly mean one thing or another, usually of reference to a phenomenon or experience, whether good or bad or light or heavy  thus,  employing the idea of "pen is mightier than sword".

Characterized by its humorous nature, tigsik comes in the form of criticisms that are usually structured with this form of art to make the statements less harsh. This style originated from Bikol's expression of having fun. It is usually presented during leisure time or on lighthearted occasions to entertain people because Bikolanos are fun-loving where teasing and joking from daily part of their lives. Thus, tigsik was born to feed the Bikolanos' hunger for enjoyment.

Tigsik writing provides an easier outlet for the Bicolanos when dealing with various issues, rendering them the chance to voice out their feelings and opinions, and at the same time, enabling them the use of literary means. It also paints a local color, paving the way to a clear image of Bicol culture and offering a distinction amongst Filipinos’ array of cultures.

Through the years, Tigsik has been formally shown with the use of media like radio broadcasts, newspapers and even Tigsik contests tagged as "Tirigsikan." Tirigsikan is played by two or more people who have mastered the expressions of Tigsik in an impromptu manner. A specific topic would be given, and the two sides would state their opinions using the Tigsik style. The first one who gives up on his turn in the competition would lose the fight. ( a sample "tirigsikan" is shown on the video below)

In modern times, however, tigsik has gained its popularity in drinking circles spree(s). It is then considered to be a puzzling remark but filled with satire. Whimsical in character, it is often played during fiesta celebrations as a means of fun and excitement.  A sample is shown below

Tigsik ko an pagselebrar nin piyesta,

Bisperas pa sana, golpe nang mga bisita.

An mga gamit sa baul na may alkampor pa,

Iniluluwas tanganing ipagamit man sainda.

As to structure, tigsik is defined by some researchers as a short, witty, on-the-spot composition on varied subjects using purely the bicol language. It is artistically delivered with  the use of rhyme and meter. Tigsik is written in free-form with a 3-4 line stanza. Hence, it follows no particular number of meter, but [it follows] the same rhythm among the lines. (Cirujales (2008), Tigsik)

Example:

Tigsik ko an m•ga ga•wi nin da•ra•ga,

Kun may gus•tong ma•ki•bis•to sa•in•da.

Sa ta•mang lu•gar, ba•kong mas•ki sa•en sa•na,

A•sin sa m•ga la•la•ki, da•i bas•ta mi•na•i•ba.
