Maria Domini is one of the most beautiful women in Batanes during her time. She was also recognized as a spy of the Guerillas from Ivana. She was tortured by the Japanese soldiers because they suspected that she was the key to the revelation of the Guerillas secrets. Moreover, they wanted to know the names of the other members of the Guerillas and to trace the whereabouts of Commodore Geronimo Cabal who was also suspected as Maria’s boyfriend. So, they kidnapped her. They brought Maria somewhere in Taytay where she was tied on a vutalaw tree (palomaria tree) along with other suspected guerillas. While she was tied on that vutalaw tree with some men, she was doubly tortured with the biting of the ants. Herein, the Japanese men started torturing her. They burn the skin of Maria with a cigarette, cut her left breast so that she’ll tell the truth. But, she remained faithful and loyal to her kababayans. Later, they cut the right breast but still she remained firm in keeping her secret. Until she became panting … gasping and finally breathless, still she didn’t confess her secrets. So, the Japanese failed in their mission. Her sacrifices facing the torture manifested by the Japanese only revealed her sincerity to the guerillas and to her rumored lover. |
