The town...
In a 256-kilometer drive North from Manila and 3-kilometer distance from Baguio, lies the small and cold town of La, Trinidad.
La Trinidad,
Benguet, aside from
being known one of
the major producers
of vegetables and
flowers, is best known
for its strawberries.
Termed as the Strawberry
Capital of the Philippines,
major production
of its strawberries are
from the LaTrinidad
Strawberry fields. This made La Trinidad
one tourist distinction not only on holidays but even normal days.
Strawberry production was started by the Americans back in the early years of 1900’s and later established an agricultural school in 1916 to improve the harvest. During the later years of 1970’s to 2003, various strawberry varieties were introduced to the locality which resulted to better quality of harvest.
Strawberries grow well in cool temperatures than in warm temperatures, making Benguet fit for the production of strawberries for its low degree measure ranging from 6ºC (lowest) – 23.2ºC (highest).
At present, La Trinidad’s economy is supported by the well-growing, fresh and sweet strawberries that tourists crave for and some other strawberry-versed products such as strawberry cakes, wines, jams, and even strawberry-flavored ice cream (sorbetes) and crinkles.
For more tourist attractions,
the Municipality of La Trinidad
made an entry to the Guinness
World Records for the largest
Strawberry cake and with
three trials, the town
finally made in 2004.
