Lifestyle Affects

Name: Valentino Sabido

Married to: Hermenegilda Ligas

Children: 2

suffering: hypertension

He was an athletic individual, but indulged in smoking and driunking, thus it greatly affected his health. Hypertension and heart problems were constant diseases in the family. Coronary thrombosis, a heart ailment, had been the cause of death by his father in the late 70's while Hypertension had been the ailment of his mother until now.

Uncontrolled eating of fatty-foods, high salt content and inadequate intake of fish and vegetables, smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages, had further cause his condition to worsen, without his knowing it. A week before the stroke, Valentino, often had blurred visions and severe cramping of his arms and legs, and just took the ordinary mefenamic tablets to ease the condition. However, on the 5th of September, 2008, this condition happened again, severely, thus forcing him to visit the doctor, together with his wife. After some physical diagnosis, his doctor had suggested that he entered the hospital for admission, since his ailment could not be remedied by just ordinary medications. He is immediately rushed to the hospital, with only half of his body functioning and the rest incapacitated due to some motor dysfunction caused by the stroke. All the necessary laboratory examinations were done, he had to be oxygenated, since his breathing is a little bit slow, and had to undergo a CT Scan, to analyze the extent of the damage in his brain. Luckily, his speech was not greatly affected as the usual case for persons having a stroke.

It was a struggle, both financially and emotionally, since the medicines cost a lot for his daily maintenance as well as the feeling that his condition might not be normal again. Eventually, following the doctor's instructions to the letter, Valentino's condition slowly improved. He already stopped from smoking( from 2 packs a day) to zero need, without any signs of craving despite the presence of smokers near him, alcohol was a no-no, only low-cholesterol foods are allowed, no meat especially chicken, pork and beef. Just fish foods (grilled/ fish soup), no other sea foods such as crabs, prawns and squids are allowed. Vegetables are highly recommended as well as food high in fibers and flavonoids , fruits rich in vitamin C. Oats and cereals are also recommended.
