       Livelihood in Timoga

Iligan City is one of the cities in the Philippines which possesses the grandeur of nature making it popular to the whole world. Anybody who can visit Iligan will surely be enchanted by the magnificent beauty of the waterfalls. Thus, it is known as the "City of Waterfalls." Aside from this, this water gives life to Iliganons who are transforming them into useful elements for survival.

One of the most illustrious surviving agent is the springs found in Timoga.  With its cool, pristine and crystal clear water which is flowing freely from the mountains,  it gives life to the spring pools. Timoga is located outside the city skirt in Brgy. Buru-un and more or less 9 kilometers from the city proper along the National Highway. Timoga is truly a wonderful, astonishing and marvelous place to visit. A place where one can relax and rest after a long days work. But what has made Timoga important to Iliganons is not just because it is a  great place to visit and stay but also, it has a great impact to the people’s livelihood.

Timoga has catered many opportunities for people to have a living. One of these is the construction of Timoga Spring Pools namely: Holiday Pool, Mimar’s Pool, Spring Pool, Main Pool, Dela Mar Pool, and Maravilla’s Pool. All pools approximately measure 2,500 - 3,000 sq. meters.  Main Pool was established in the year 1965. It has provided  plenty of job opportunities to the people residing nearby. When the business has boomed, people begin to build stores and food stalls. These give more income to Iligan and boosted the city’s tourism thus encouraging foreigners to visit and invest there and offering the unemployed citizens.

As the business boom many visitors are attracted, like so many businessman build their own commerce to raise their living. Stalls, sheds, snack bars, cottages, grilled fish stalls and lechon ( roasted pig ) stalls  are put up along the roads.

Stalls found in front of the Timoga Spring Pools.

Because of Timoga’s overflowing water, the pools have more water than they require.  There is a lot of excess water which is flowing directly towards the ocean. Because of this, the residents looked for a way to make use of the excess water.

By using the water, they wash cars for a fee.  As of now there are 4 car washing businesses found there. The first in the business is the SMG Car Wash which started in 1989. Other residents then followed. Any type of vehicles can stop by to have their cars cleaned and spotless.

Another is the “labada” business where people can do their own laundry or do laundry to others for a fee. People living in areas where water supply is limited also make use of the laundry area in Timoga. These businesses serve as their source of income and their living.

All of these lead not only Brgy. Buru-un, where Timoga is located, but also the whole city towards progress and advancement. It has helped raise the economical status of the whole city and the living status of the populace.
