Rafael "Paeng' Batugal
:The Golden Trombone
(October 15, 1909 - June 24, 1982)
Mr. Rafael "Paeng" Alipon Batugal, popularity known as the "Golden Trombone", was born to parents Leon Zamora Batugal and Teresita Guico Alipon, with his only surviving sister Mrs. Amanda Batugal Concepcion. At the age of 12,staying at his ninong's house, he studied music at the Manila Cathedral for 2 months.
Back to Santa Rosa, Paeng then studied to play the slide trombone under the guidance of Mr. Jose Bascon, Sr. With his God-given talent, he was soon a soloist of the Muling Silang band, joined the city orchestras in 1925, went to Shanghai, China with Conrado Ilagan and
In 1939, Paeng was 1st accepted as the trombone player of the Manila Symphony Orchestra after the audition. It was common knowledge then that only Paeng can play the trombone part of the music Bolero. In 1943, Paeng won in a contest held in Manila, as the Best Trombone Player of the Philippines.
During the war he played for musical shows featuring movie stars, in selected towns across the country. In 1946 he became the bandleader of the Tanggulan Band which he renamed Roseňa Symphonic Band. It was during these years that the band reaped laurels for Santa Rosa. For several years Paeng was the resident conductor of several bands like the Angat Band and the UST Band.
A year later, Mr. and Mrs. Batugal spent most of their time teaching youngsters the solfeggio and later musical instruments. Thus, in 1956 the Roseňa Jr. Band came into being. The band won Second Place at the First and Second National Band Contest held at Luneta year 1961 and 1962.
Paeng and Paz were tireless in their chosen mission. They continued teaching kids and in 1976, another Roseňa Jr. Band '76 was organized.
After the death of his wife in 1978, Paeng continued arranging music and conducting other bands to keep him busy. The last time he conducted the Roseňa Band was in 1981 during the Panglalawigang Balikbanda held in Paete, Laguna, where the band got the Second Place.
Paeng was well known as a bandleader and arranger but most of all, as an instrumentalist and was highly respected by his contemporaries; one of them was Lucio San Pedro. In fact, he was still with the MSO playing as first trombone till his death in 1982, June 24 at the age of 73.

Upon returning to his native land, he produced his own orchestra in Nagcarlan, Laguna and another one in the neighboring town of Rizal where he met his future wife Paz Doria also from a musical family. They got married on 1932 when Paeng was 23 and Paz was 16.
