Camiguin lies off the coast of Misamis Oriental in the Bohol Sea. Seven volcanoes rise in the middle of the island province of Camiguin and have shaped both the land and the culture of the people. Camiguin, the smalles province in Region X, had a total population of 81, 293 persons based on the results of the 2007 Census of Population with 51% males and 49% females. Camiguin is composed of five municipalities. One of these is Mambajao as the capital with 15 barangays, which registered the highest population followed by Catarman of 14 barangays. The third is Mahinog of 13 barangays then followed by Sagay with 9 barangays. Guinsiliban registered the lowest population with 7 barangays. Mambajao has a land area of 89 square kilometers; Catarman with a land area of 53.75 square kilometers; Mahinog, 32.55 square kilometers; Sagay with a land area of 44.13 square kilometers; and Guinsiliban with a land area of 19.20 square kilometers. The province’s population density has gone up to 342 persons per square kilometer. Of the five municipalities, Mahinog has the highest population density of 405 persons per square kilometer. Mambajao followed with a population density of 397. Catarman ranks third with 299, followed by Guinsiliban with 290. Sagay posted the lowest population density of only 254 persons per square kilometer. Moreover, Camiguin has a total of 14,826 hoseholds, 40% of which lives in Mambajao. Guinsiliban has the least number of households at 1,066 or 7% of the province’s total. Yet, Camiguin has an arterial circumferential national road of 64.085 kilometers almost all of which have already been concreted. The number of motor vehicles registered in Camiguin totaled 2,610. Camiguin is powerd by the Camiguin Electric Cooperative (CAMELCO). Power reaches the island through a 10.6-kilometer submarine cable from its transformer at Esperanza, Kinoguitan, Misamis Oriental. Thus, the common source of groundwater in Camiguin is the alluvial area. This is utilized for deep well and artesian well construction, however, limited in number as most households rely on piped (Level III) water system from natural springs. The total family income of Camiguin is P1.263 billion, with an average family income of P87,441. Mortality also occurs in Camiguin. The leading cause of mortality in the province is pneumonia with 7.7% of the cases coming from the infant age group. Pneumonia also claimed the live of 70 patients from those aging 65 years and above. Other top causes of mortality are cancer, chronic heart failure, bleeding peptic ulcer, accident, pulmonary tuberculosis, CVA, renal failure, myocardial infection, septicemia and hypertension. Camiguin had a median age of 21 years, this meant that half of the population were aged 21 years and below. The 0 to 14 age group made up 37 percent of the total population in Camiguin while those aged 65 years and above comprised six percent. The economically active population aged 15 to 64 years made up of 57 percent.
