The establishment of multimillion companies in calumpang such as DOLE Philippines, Sta Monica Canning Corporation and other fishing and canning firms brought about an exodus of people to the area. The rapid increase in population magnifies the number of high school age students thus, former Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Mrs. Leonor F. Peñalosa and the late Mayor Antonio C. Acharon realized the need to put up a public secondary school in the area, commencing the establishment of GENERAL SANTOS CITY HIGH SCHOOL which caters teh educational need of the new and flourishing committee. This institution had started its modest beginning in July 1980 with the passage of a resolution by the Sangguniang Panglungsod and subsequently by the virtue of Republic Act 6642. Mr. Jacobino C. Java was then the first administrator to 117 first year students and 6 teachers. In five years, the school's population continued to increase in number under the administration of Mr. Ruben Aquino (1983-1984) and Mrs. Vi.venia Caña (1984-1986). In 1986, a dynamic leader evolve in the person of Mrs. Cristina N. Mari who made significant academic and infrastructure developments, giving the school distinguish reputation of the DIVISION LEADER SCHOOL. The retirement of Mrs. Cristina N. Mari in the year 2000 paved back the way for Mrs. Estrella C. Lariosa (then the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent) as the Officer Incharge of this school. The headship of General Santos City High School was formally given to Mrs. Veronica Punsalan in the year 2001. Since then remarkable changes took place in the academe, sports, and in the arts. In school year 2003-2004 the school was awarded a 3.75 million pesos multipurpose gymnasium donated by the Taiwanese philanthropists in partnership with the Local Government under the leadership of the Hon. City Mayor Pedro B. Acharon Jr. In the school year 2005-2006, Mrs. Veronica Punsalan (2001-2006) had her vacation leave, Mr. Isagani S. Dela Cruz, Master Teacher in Mathematic, serve as the Officer In-Charge until his designation as the Assistants Schools Superintendent in Sarangani in the same year. Mrs. Gilda A. Orendain, Head Teacher II, continued the task from September 16,2005 until April 15, 2006. During her time, 4 teachers were sent as scholars in Manila and Bukidnon. The school year 2006-2007 ushered new Officer In-Charge in the person of Mr. Angelito C. Llanos. His administration streamlined significant educational advancement in the field of Information and Communication Technology as the school became the REGIONAL ICT CENTER with Project ALERT as the flagship banner. Shorlty, after the recognition and the integration of ICT program. These facilities include the digitally-equipped and Audio-Visual room (the first in the history of all public secondary schools in Region XII), School Main Marker, Covered Pathways and the Cyber-Ed center which was constructed through the collaborative efforts of the PTCA, school administration and the community. Since its birth in 1980, General Santos City indeed has lived up its worth as the PREMIER public school in the city. U. S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley today announced two awards to use cutting-edge technology to help improve the teaching of math and science. The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has received a five-year, $39 million grant to create a new national online service called Teacherline and the Concord Consortium will use a one-year, $1 million grant for the Seeing Math Telecommunications Project, which will study the use of the Internet to deliver professional development resources to teachers. Recently, the National Commission on Mathematics and Science, chaired by former Sen. John Glenn, issued Before Its Too Late, a report focused on the urgent need to improve the preparation and professional development of math and science teachers. PBS Teacherline will link the resources of PBS, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, school districts in 16 states, state departments of education, five colleges of education, the International Society for Technology in Education, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Current and prospective teachers will receive a wide variety of math and technology resources to aid teaching and learning, including on-line mentoring, teacher discussions, and videos of classroom practices. The project is designed to help teachers meet professional and state standards for math and technology. The key innovation in Seeing Math will be 10 highly interactive on-line digital video case studies, which will provide math teaching models that have proven to be highly effective in improving teaching techniques. The case studies can be linked to lesson plans, students? Work, standards and assessments, teacher reflection, and on-line discussion groups. These grants were funded by the Telecommunications Mathematics Demonstration Project in the Education Departments Office of Educational Research and Improvement. |
